Wealthsimple and Questrade Are Great for Building Wealth. Retirement Is a Different Story.

I like Wealthsimple and Questrade for what they're designed to do: accumulate wealth. They're low-cost, easy to use, and they give Canadians access to diversified investment portfolios without the high fees that have traditionally eaten away at returns. We use a similar platform with our clients called ModernAdvisor – achieves the same but with more guidance and advisory.
A Retirement Plan Is Not an Income Plan
The challenge is that retirement isn't about accumulation anymore. It's about turning a lifetime of savings into reliable, sustainable income.
Most investors spend 30 to 40 years focused on one question: How do I grow my money? Then, almost overnight, the question changes to: How do I make my money last?
That's where platforms like Wealthsimple and Questrade start to show their limitations.
While both platforms do a good job of helping investors build portfolios, they provide very little guidance around retirement income planning. They don't help answer critical questions like when to start CPP, whether to defer OAS, which accounts should be drawn down first, or how to create the most tax-efficient income stream throughout retirement.
Just as importantly, retirement portfolios on these platforms typically remain fully exposed to market risk. Whether markets are up or down, the retiree bears virtually all the investment risk. This creates what planners call "sequence of returns risk" where a significant market decline early in retirement can permanently damage a portfolio's ability to generate income for decades.
There's More Than a RRIF
There are solutions specifically designed to address these risks. Annuities and GMWB contracts are insurance-backed products that can provide contractually guaranteed lifetime income payments, independent of market performance. These strategies can reduce uncertainty, protect against longevity risk, and help retirees worry less about outliving their money.
Unfortunately, these solutions generally aren't available through Wealthsimple or Questrade.
That's why I often say Wealthsimple and Questrade are excellent accumulation platforms, but they aren't retirement income platforms. Building wealth and spending wealth are two completely different challenges. The tools that help you reach retirement aren't necessarily the tools that will help you live comfortably throughout it.
A successful retirement isn't just about having a portfolio. It's about having a plan for income, taxes, risk management, and longevity. And that's a conversation that goes far beyond buying ETFs.
