The Advisor Who Switched Sides
After years inside the traditional financial advisory model, Tyler Hoffman saw the same pattern everywhere: good, hardworking Canadians kept on a retirement timeline that served the industry more than it served them.
Tyler's Story
After five years as a professional umpire in Minor League Baseball (AA), I thought I'd found my calling making split-second decisions under pressure.
In 2001, I got into financial advising. I brought the same thing into that career that I'd always cared about — fairness, accuracy, doing right by people.
I spent the next 15 years guiding clients through investments and insurance.
But somewhere along the way, I got frustrated.
I watched an entire industry built around selling products instead of giving real advice. My clients deserved better than that. Honestly, so did I.
So in 2015, I did something most people thought was crazy. I sold my practice and walked away from traditional financial planning completely.
I spent the next four years just… figuring it out. What should financial advice actually look like, if you stripped away every incentive to sell something?
Here's what I landed on: people don't need more products. They need someone in their corner who isn't getting paid based on what they sell them.
The problem is, most advisors don't have that option. Their income depends on what you buy — not on how well you actually do. It's baked into the system.
So in 2019, I launched OnPoint Private Wealth Coaching around one idea: Advice First.
I took my own advice, by the way. It's how I retired at 49.
Now I help people do the same thing — design the life they actually want, and build the wealth to support it, on purpose.
This isn't just financial planning. It's lifestyle planning and wealth coaching, done the way I always thought it should be done.
When you work with OnPoint, there's no hidden agenda. No product-driven strategy sitting underneath the advice. Just honest guidance that puts your goals — and your life — first.
So you don't strike out like this guy! 👇
